ok.... got the ssl to work
now... when i go to the site, it states its not trusted. is there anything i can do other than purchasing a ssl cert?

you can try startssl
it's free and almost every browser recognise its ssl

to remove virtual host override just clear the override box
i mean, delete all override entries

i did remove all the override entries but it still shows up as it is overridden.

Check again you still have something you didn't revert already.
