Does suhosin or any other mechanism other than the php.ini possibly disable shell_exec and exec?
I was expecting to find it disabled in the php.ini, but it is not.
It, as I feared was caused by suhosin, which I can disable for the one site that needs it. Is there any way to allow shell_exec in the suhosi.php file per site? I think it could be whitelisted, but if I do it in the suhosin.ini, it will be disabled globally which would be worse.

Everyone makes mistakes, but to truly screw up it takes the root password!
