I'm not sure if we are talking about the same DDOS attacks here. You can survive 10GB/s attack as it will not harm directly the server but your network bandwith will stall. So how users will connect then? If the attack clogg your upstream connectivity. In same cases here DDOS attack are so large that they take down full racks of servers as all those sharing same routers get border impact. I don't think I'm the one here misunderstanding those attacks or you might be talking about another type of attacks then.
