Safe for production environment?

I use Sentora exactly for that, production ready is a shady territory...
It is not a complete product, but it is evolving fast and has a great community support.

Security issues? Most of the reported ones are fixed, and usually they are fixed very fast when reported.

As with any other server software you will need to setup it to suit your needs, also it is up to you to harden the security via a firewall and other methods.

That said, yes, it is production ready.
