ProFTP don't rely on user's access permission that's why you can't change it thru FTP.
No support using PM (Auto adding to IGNORE list!), use the forum.

The problem now is that the file permissions are not with 777, using the file manager.
Only zadmin managed to do this.

"www-data" is a user group in Linux where are the users when uses the webservers and others.
This group is used to do permissions for things utilized in web services. For example, the folder /var/www in a Apache installation

how to update to latest version 2.1.8?

Today eXtplorer 2.1.8 was released, fixing some minor vulnerabilities.
Changelog:
- added security functions for protection against CSRF attacks
- fixed "directories with the name '0' are not loading"
